Is Trip Cancellation recommended for Thailand?

Whether it’s recommended depends on your individual circumstances. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Pros to keep in mind:

  • Peace of mind: Unexpected events happen. Trip cancellation coverage acts as a safety net, protecting your non-refundable expenses (flights, hotels, tours) if you’re forced to cancel due to covered reasons like illness, injury, or natural disasters. This allows you to relax and focus on enjoying your trip, knowing you’re financially protected. Read your policy before deciding.
  • Financial security:  Imagine having to cancel your dream Thailand vacation due to a medical emergency. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for those pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses, minimizing the financial blow.

Cons to Consider:

  • Policy Exclusions:  Travel insurance policies are not all-encompassing. It’s crucial to understand what events your specific policy covers. Common exclusions include cancellations due to pre-existing medical conditions, change of plans, or cancellations by the traveler themself (unless for a covered reason). Be sure to read carefully the exclusions list to avoid surprises.
  • Cost:  Trip cancellation insurance adds an extra layer of expense to your trip. The cost can vary depending on the coverage level and trip duration. Weigh this additional cost against the potential financial loss from a cancellation.

An alternative to getting Trip Cancellation Coverage is to book your trip with refundable options. While often pricier, opting for refundable flights and accommodations offers built-in cancellation flexibility. This can be a good alternative if you prioritize flexibility and are risk-averse, however sometimes not worth it when you compare the costs.

How much Trip Cancellation coverage do you need for Thailand?

There’s no magic number when it comes to ideal trip cancellation coverage for Thailand. It depends on your specific trip and how much financial security you desire. Focus on the portion you’d lose if you had to cancel. This typically includes flights (often the most expensive element), accommodation deposits, and pre-booked tours or activities.

Trip Cancellation for Thailand Real Examples:

Question: “I had an accident in my home country before my planned travel. Unfortunately, it resulted in a shoulder fracture, and my doctor advised against traveling. Thankfully, I informed my flight agency more than 24 hours before my scheduled flight, so I could get a refund for the flight. However, I had already booked a non-refundable Airbnb for a month. Can I claim reimbursement for this hotel charge?”

Answer: Yes, with LUMA Asia Pass and under this instance, you would be reimbursed for the hotel non-refundable charge.

Question: “I had a trip planned to Thailand for a friend’s wedding and however I wanted to change my flight tickets because the wedding gift I bought I dont like and need to change it, can I cancel my trip and claim for trip cancellation? Will I be refunded 100%?

Answer: No, this would most likely not be a reason to be covered under LUMA Asia Pass. Note that our Cancellation benefit is not a “cancel for any reason” benefit. Since the reason for cancellation is for personal preferences and not an urgent unforeseen issue, the cancellation charge in this instance won’t be covered.
