International Travel Checklist: Ensuring Your Trip with LUMA Travel Insurance

The world awaits! As you gear up for your trip, one crucial step can make all the difference: smart preparation. Our essential International Travel Checklist guides you through key planning stages, including how to ensure your journey is protected with an international travel insurance

International Travel Checklist

1. Understand Your International Destination’s Potential Risks

  • Staying informed about local events and conditions: Be aware of what’s happening at your destination. Political situations, natural disasters, or other events can affect your plans. Also, stay informed about any travel advisories issued by your government for your destination, as these might have implications for your safety and potentially with your Travel Insurance coverage.
  • Understanding insurance and known events: If such events occur before your trip; be aware that most travel insurance policies, including LUMA, generally exclude claims arising from events you were aware of before purchasing the policy.
For example, if a hurricane is predicted and you buy insurance after the warning, a trip cancellation claim due to the hurricane likely won’t be covered. Of course, if you are already at your destination and a natural disaster suddenly occurs, this would not be considered an exclusion based on prior knowledge.

2. Research Healthcare at Your International Destination

  • Know where to seek help: Research medical facilities at your destination, especially if you plan activities in remote areas. Search ahead of time, where to go in case of a serious accident and how to reach the hospital.
  • Language considerations: In some countries, particularly in remote areas, medical staff may have limited English proficiency. Plan accordingly.

3. Consider Your International Trip Duration

Short trips vs. long stays: LUMA Travel Insurance is designed for short-term international trips, not for individuals seeking to reside in another country. If you are planning to live abroad, you will likely need a more suitable health insurance plan. Contact our teams to see your long-term international health insurance options.

4. Understand the Value of Your Belongings

Know what’s covered and coverage limits: Be aware that Travel Insurance would usually have specific limits on what can be covered for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage. Reimbursement isn’t guaranteed for the full purchase value of items. To ensure a smooth claim, be prepared to provide evidence that you packed the items and that they were indeed lost.

5. Understand Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

What is a pre-existing condition? Generally, a pre-existing medical condition refers to any illness, injury, or condition for which you have received or required medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment preceding the commencement date of your coverage.

Travel Insurance plans including LUMA’s, typically do not cover pre-existing conditions.

6. Confirm Your Travel Insurance Coverage

  • Read and understand your policy: Carefully review your Travel Insurance policy to ensure you understand what is covered and what is not.
  • Ask if you’re unsure: If you have any doubts about your LUMA coverage, don’t hesitate to contact our teams for clarification.
  • Consider your activities: Check if your planned trip and activities are covered.
For example, while LUMA Travel Insurance covers Trekking at an altitude limit greater than 5,000 meters above sea level, we do not cover any trekking activity in Nepal. Make sure you fully understand anything that could be related to your planned activities or destinations.

7. Note Down Important Insurance Information

  • Emergency contact details: Keep the 24/7 hotline number provided by the Insurer readily accessible (save it in your phone, write it down).
  • Policy number: Have your International Travel Insurance policy number easily available for any communication with the Insurer.
  • Claim procedures: Understand the basic steps for filing a claim, including documents and information you need to provide to support your claim.
With LUMA, for claims above a certain amount, please note original documents will be required, although you can send us digital copies for our initial review.

8. Inform Someone of Your International Travel Insurance

Leave a copy of your trip itinerary and of your international travel insurance policy with a trusted friend or family member. This can be helpful in case of an emergency during your international travel.
