Why get private health insurance in Vietnam?

Private health insurance gives you private hospitals, direct billing, and medical evacuation.

Vietnam’s public health insurance (BHYT)

Public healthcare in Vietnam is generally affordable, but language barriers and long wait times can be challenging for both locals and foreigners. Foreign employees of Vietnamese companies who hold a work permit are usually enrolled in Vietnam’s public health insurance scheme, managed by Vietnam Social Security (VSS). It is a useful base, but it works mainly through designated hospitals and in Vietnamese, and private hospitals that accept it do so at capped rates.

What private health insurance adds

Without private cover, you pay the full bill at a private hospital yourself. Private health insurance gives you:

  • Private hospitals with English-speaking medical staff
  • Shorter waiting times for appointments and procedures
  • Free choice of provider, in Vietnam and internationally
  • The right specialist, even beyond Vietnam’s borders
  • Direct billing at network hospitals and clinics
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation

How much does healthcare cost in Vietnam?

A room rate can look affordable, but it is only part of the total cost of a stay. Once consultations, tests, medication, and treatment are added, a two-night stay in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Binh Duong costs more than 5 times what the room alone would.

How much does health insurance cost for expats in Vietnam?

Your age sets the starting point of your premium. The plan you select and the deductible you set shape it from there. The deductible is the share you pay yourself in a policy year before the insurer pays the rest. A larger deductible lowers your premium.

Health insurance for foreigners in Vietnam

Finding the right care in a new country can be hard. Vietnam’s healthcare system is built for Vietnamese residents, and the language and the process are unfamiliar, whether you work here or are raising a family. The right cover depends on your situation.

Health insurance in Vietnam: frequently asked questions

Applying and cover

Who can apply for health insurance in Vietnam with LUMA?

Adults between 18 and 70 years of age can apply, and children under 18 are insured on a parent’s policy. All nationalities are accepted, including Vietnamese nationals living in Vietnam. You must live at least 185 days a year in Vietnam or another eligible country in Asia, and some professions are not accepted. If you are unsure whether you qualify, send us your details and we will confirm your options.

Do I need a health check to apply?

No, a health check-up is not mandatory. Your application is based on the health declaration you complete, and the insurer may request a check-up case by case.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Usually not. Insurers class any condition or symptom that existed before the policy start date as pre-existing, and individual policies in Vietnam rarely cover them. If you declare a condition fully during the application and the insurer explicitly accepts it, cover is sometimes possible, so declare your medical history completely. A LUMA consultant can check your options before you apply.

Are there waiting periods?

Yes. Waiting periods apply to some benefits and are listed in each policy’s terms. Before you decide, a LUMA consultant will tell you exactly which waiting periods apply to your chosen plan.

When does my coverage begin?

Your cover starts on the date you are accepted, which happens once LUMA approves your application and receives your payment. Waiting periods for specific benefits may apply if you do not previously hold similar insurance.

What are the common exclusions in health insurance?

Health insurance commonly excludes cosmetic treatment, the consequences of alcohol consumption, and pre-existing conditions.

How does direct billing work in Vietnam?

With direct billing, the medical facility sends its bill for eligible treatment straight to the insurer for review and payment, so you are not asked to pay and then reclaim. In Vietnam, LUMA’s preferred network offers this for both inpatient and outpatient treatment. Network hospitals and clinics cannot confirm whether a treatment is covered: exclusions, benefit limits, deductibles and co-payments may leave some charges uncovered, and the provider may then bill you directly.

Care in Vietnam

As a foreigner in Vietnam, is local healthcare sufficient?

It depends on your location and your condition. Vietnam’s healthcare system has been improving, but public facilities can have language barriers and longer waiting times than private hospitals, and emergency services may be more accessible in private facilities. Expats living in Vietnam often prefer private facilities for their quality, convenience, and English-speaking staff.

What should I do in a medical emergency in Vietnam?

Get medical care first. Call 115 for an ambulance or go to the nearest hospital. Once you are stable, or if someone else can do it for you, contact LUMA on +66 2 494 3600, and the team will help with the details of your treatment and cover.

Can digital nomads get health insurance in Vietnam?

Yes, when the stay is longer than 6 months. LUMA’s health insurance plans in Vietnam suit stays of more than 6 months. For a stay under 6 months, choose LUMA’s travel insurance for Vietnam instead.
