What is the best health insurance for retirees in Thailand?

There are many health insurance companies offering health insurance for retirees in Thailand, with a wide range of medical cover and suiting all kinds of budgets.

Here are some tips for choosing the best health insurance for a retirement visa in Thailand:

  1. 1. First of all; define your objective. Are you looking for a health insurance to meet your Long Stay visa application only? Or are you looking for an actual medical cover you can use in Thailand? Both options are available in the market, but they come with varying price points. The more extensive the insurance coverage, the higher the cost.
  2.
  3. 2. Make sure the policy meets all requirements to your specific Thai Retirement visa application
  4.
  5. 3. Make sure the health insurance company will provide a Foreign Insurance Certificate to submit along your Long Stay visa application if you’re applying to an OA visa or OX visa.
  6.
  7. 4. Read the fine prints. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the policy so there is no surprise during times of necessity. Top things to check in your health insurance to retire in Thailand:
  8. Inclusions: what can you actually claim including for Inpatient and Outpatient.
  9. Exclusions: what conditions or treatments are not covered by the policy. Please note that pre existing conditions are usually excluded by all insurers.
  10. Waiting periods: is there a waiting period to start using the policy, or a waiting period for specific conditions?
  11. Deductible if any / Co-pay if any
  12. How to claim (including what documents are required to claim, and what is the process to get reimbursed)

Do I need to do a medical check up to get a health insurance?

Insurance companies in Thailand vary in their product requirements. Some require a medical checkup for all applicants, some mandate a checkup from a certain age only, and some will rely solely on a thorough application form to assess applicants’ profile.

In the case where a health checkup is necessary to apply for a health insurance plan, it is customary for the applicant to bear the cost of the checkup. This expense is typically not covered by the insurance plan, and it cannot be reimbursed even if the applicant becomes eligible for the plan.
